Top DJ arrested for corruption

FORMER Gagasi FM DJ Nothando Zungu, who was known on the airwaves as Mumgoh, has been bust for corruption.

She handed herself over to the Hawks yesterday morning and briefly appeared in the Durban’s Specialised Commercial Crimes Court.

She faces charges of corruption, theft, fraud and money laundering.

The state didn’t oppose bail, but prosecutor Mlungisi Magwanyana told the court Zungu played a major role in the case.

He said she had allegedly held several meetings with former KZN Economic Development MEC Mike Mabuyakhulu and Sizwe Mkhize, the owner of the company which allegedly shared the R28 million with other suspects, including Zungu.

Her lawyer Paul Jorgensen told the court her client received R600 000 from Mkhize’s company because she had a contract with him. They were both granted R30 000 bail by magistrate Christopher Mazibuko and will return to court on 6 April.

Zungu has been implicated in the R28 million scandal with Mabuyakhulu and his department head, Sizwe “Maqhoboza” Mkhize, who appeared last week on the same charges.

It’s believed she made connections at the department after she being appointed a KZN tourism ambassador.

The court heard that while she was still at Gagasi FM, her company, Ishashalazi Productions, was involved in organising Durban’s North Sea Jazz Festival in 2012.

The gig was going to be funded by the KZN Economic Development and Tourism department with the R28 million but was cancelled.

Despite the cancellation the department allegedly paid Mkhize’s company.
