One of South Africa’s top music producers has died.
La Shad – whose real name was Mpumelelo Ngubeni – died at Tembisa Hospital in Ekurhuleni on Monday morning after a short illness.
He was signed with Baainar Records and worked with well-known
artists like DJ Fresh, Lulo Cafe, NaakMusiq, Eltonnick and Zaki Ibrahim.
Lunga Nombewu, the founder of Baainar Records, said La Shad was down to earth and knew everybody.
“He had a rare talent and there will not be another La Shad. We thought he would recover from his illness, but sadly he died,” said Lunga.
“His mum took the news badly because he was a wonderful son. “He loved music and was inspired by his father, who is a bishop in Ivory Park.
He taught himself how to play the piano and whenever we needed someone to play the keyboard, we would go to him.
“Without fail he would produce something incredible.”
La Shad sharpened his piano skills through a jazz development programme at the Moses Taiwa Molelekwa Arts Foundation in 2007.
He was also a member of a band named after the late jazz legend Moses Molelekwa.
His memorial service will be held at corner Mopedi and Radebe streets in Ivory Park on Saturday at 1pm.
